Five of Ternary Software’s Staff Speak at Agile 2006 International Conference
Exton, PA, July 28, 2006
-- Agile 2006, held from July 23 – 28 in Minneapolis, and the schedule was packed with research papers,
educators’ symposium, experience reports, discovery sessions, tutorials and hands-on sessions.
Ternary Software of Exton, a regional Agile pioneer, had five of its leaders selected to present.
These presentations spanned four very different sessions:
-
Brian Robertson, founder and CEO of Ternary Software, presented
“Introduction to Holacracy™: A Framework for Agile Leadership and Decision Making.”
Brian discussed Holacracy™, a system of decision-making and governance that harnesses self-organization
and facilitates rapid adaptation to change. Holacracy fills a gap in most Agile methods, by adding an Agile decision
making process and management structure that values self-organization and integrates with Agile software
development processes. Holacracy adds significant value when applied on a single Agile team, and its fractal
structure can integrate Agile decision-making and leadership across multiple teams, a large department, or an
entire company.
-
Wade Lee, Director of Business Development at Ternary Software, presented
“Extreme Selling in the Early Stage Space.” Wade explained how the entrepreneur’s role in
an early stage company is really a balancing act, splitting a 24-hour day between finding customers, building
product and securing financing. Wade detailed how Agile development provides the entrepreneur with a cost-efficient
market differentiator that can make the difference between success and failure, by stretching resources,
facilitating funding and quickly producing a working prototype with which to win new customers.
-
Gareth Powell and Patrick Wilson-Welsh, Team Leads and Senior Architects at Ternary Software presented
“Agile Web Development with Lightweight Java Framework.” Gareth and Patrick explained how
employing Agile web development using “standard” frameworks – such as .NET or J2EE – is difficult, mainly because the
environments have test-averse constraints such as runtime code generation. Over the past two to three years, a series of
lightweight technologies have radically changed the landscape in the Java world. Gareth and Patrick led a group
of users in a fully hands-on guided opportunity to test-drive real software changes using both unit and acceptance level tests
working with Java, Spring, Hibernate, Velocity and FitNesse technologies.
-
Alexia Bowers, co-founder and COO of Ternary Software presented
“A Customer's Perspective of an Agile Team.” Alexia described her experience as a product manager
on an Agile team and her perspective as a customer. She detailed the benefits and challenges while working together
on a software project and offered suggestions for both programmers and those filling a customer role on an
Agile team.
The annual Agile conference is presented by The Agile Alliance, a non-profit organization that supports individuals and organizations who
use Agile approaches to develop software. Unlike traditional software development methods which generate time-consuming and lengthy
specifications before development begins, Agile software development relies on continual partnership and communication between the
developer and client. A working prototype is created quickly allowing interactive, hands-on project evolution, drastically reducing the time
and cost of delivering quality software. Driven by the simple priorities articulated in the Manifesto for Agile Software Development, Agile
development approaches deliver value to organizations and end users faster and with higher quality.
